The Sign..

of the horned hand.

what does it mean?

much too many singaporeans around have shown this sign thinking it represents coolness or as a salute to something cool (e.g a song well played in a band performance), or that it means 'rock on' (of which the widespread assumption being heavily influenced by the [insert alternate word for carpet here] populace.)
still don't know what it is?

there you go.

people may make comparisons to spider-man's sign when he shoots out a web-line.
however, the difference lies here:

see the thumb?
the definition of the sign with the thumb extended:
"The sign for "I love you" in American Sign Language, which is made by also extending the thumb."

no link to web-spinning, i'm sure. but definitely no link to the horned hand, which is defined here:
"The corna (Italian for horns, also mano cornuta, horned hand and fare le corna, to make the horns) is a gesture with a vulgar meaning in Mediterranean countries and a variety of meanings and uses in other cultures. Its origins can be traced to Ancient Greece. It is realized by extending the index and little fingers while holding the middle and ring fingers down with the thumb."

being a vulgar sign in many countries -even popularized as a satanic salute in the 1960s by Anton LeVey (the founder of the church of satan)- its a wonder how most singaporeans are ignorant and continue to show that sign in photos and stuff without knowing its meaning.. truly singaporean.

then again, most other terms and/or gestures are used blindly here in singapore, without people knowing their true meanings. as long as their friend uses it, they use it. "nothing wrong what, everyone also do." the age old excuse rises up.
false meanings even creep in, used by some to deceive others into thinking that the term and/or gesture shown isn't as harsh as it really is. either that or they don't know the meaning but gei kiang. - yes, i know what that means.

it's sad, really.

just thought of blogging this after looking through some photos.
no condemnation, no names mentioned.

cough.
